Shining One

Shining One is the pre-debut song by Japanese boy group BE:FIRST. It was released as a digital single on August 16, 2021. It was later re-recorded and included as the thirteenth track of BE:FIRST's first album BE:1.
The song was used as the Final Screening song during THE FIRST, and the Team Shining and Team One versions were released later as part of a special CD.

Shining One was originally written as the theme song for the Final Screening of audition program THE FIRST, from which BE:FIRST was born. As part of their challenge, the 10 finalists were split into two teams, Team Shining and Team One, and each performed their own version of the song. Following the performance, the final group members would be announced and Shining One would then become their pre-debut song. The song's producer, ☆Taku Takahashi, reworked the track for BE:FIRST's release.[1]

The song was released to download and streaming services on August 16, 2021 along with the premiere of the music video on BE:FIRST's YouTube channel. The video reached 1 million views in 4 hours and took the top spot on YouTube Japan's trending music video rankings.[2][3]

On August 25 2021, Shining One was performed for the first time on television on NTV morning news program Sukkiri, which had been chronicling the audtion from the beginning and would continue to provide updates on BE:FIRST as well as other BMSG artists.

The song did well on the charts following its release, taking the #1 spot on both of Oricon's Weekly Download and Streaming Charts[4], #1 and #2 on Billboard Japan's Download and Streaming charts respectively[5][6], as well a #2 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100[7].

The song was chosen as Sukkiri's September 2021 opening theme [8]

Team Shining & Team One Versions[]

Studio recordings of each team's version were later released as part of THE FIRST CD, a special return gift for contributors of BMSG's crowdfunding project.[9]

Re-recorded version[]

To show BE:FIRST's vocal improvement, a re-recorded version was included in the group's first album, BE:1, as the thirteenth track.
The song was pre-released digitally on August 16, 2022, exactly a year after the original's release, to celebrate the group's first anniversary since their pre-debut.
To promote the song, the members went on 14 different radio shows that day. [10]

  • The performance scenes in the music video were filmed 30 minutes after THE FIRST's Final Screening. The newly chosen members were immediately tasked to learn Shining One's seven member dance formation on the spot and the scene was filmed on the stage of the screening venue.[1]
  • Even after releasing their first album BE:1 a year into the group's formation, the boys still think Shining One is their most difficult song, in terms of both choreography and melody. [56]
