Scream is a song by BE:FIRST. It's the lead track in their first album BE:1. It was pre-released digitally on July 25, 2022.

Background and Release[]

On July 21, BE:FIRST held a Twitter icon-jacking campaign called "BE:1 is coming up". By logging into a special website, the fans' Twitter icons would be changed at random to a picture with either the letter "S", "C", "R", "E", "A", "M" or the numbers "0", "7", "2", "5", teasing the release date and name of the lead track of their first album BE:1. The release was confirmed on July 22. [1]

“Scream” is described as an intense, exhilarating dance track that shows a challenging new side of BE:FIRST. [2]
The accompanying music video is based on the idea of “returning to the new normal” in a world where self-restraint and other limitations still continue. It interprets the title “Scream” as a thirst for liberation and energy, with visuals that show the catharsis of loudly screaming one’s desires. The video features the story of the members of BE:FIRST overcoming the oppressive world of “walls”, “rules,” and “fear” to face the future and advance to the highest stage.[2]
The music video was produced in collaboration with premium gaming laptop company Alienware. The collaboration was made possible by the common theme of "liberation from constraints" that underlies both the company and BE:FIRST. [3]

About the choreography, choreographer kazuki said [4]

Based on the theme of "Let's prove what the best is," which is also in the lyrics of the song, I was conscious of a strong, sharp, and overwhelming performance. I also wanted to include a sense of "composure" to express absolute confidence. One of the key points of the choreography this time was the theme of "nails" in my mind. I included a lot of strong and sharp movements, such as clawing at the throat and clawing forward.

On July 30, JUNON, LEO and MANATO took part in an AWA LOUNGE event to promote the song. [5].

To promote the song, each member curated a playlist with the theme of "Scream summer mood": RYUHEI's, SOTA's, LEO's, JUNON's, SHUNTO's, RYOKI's, MANATO's.

The Music Video was on rotation on M-ON! Recommend during the month of August 2022 [6]

Trivia[]

  • The music video shooting took a total of 4 days. [22]
  • According to SKY-HI, the music video is one of the most expensive of the past 22 years in Japanese music industry [23]
  • Every member filmed his solo shots separately on different days, so they couldn't see how the other members' turned out.[22]
  • Once again, each member has a different concept and backstory for his solo shots.
  • For his "hahaha..." line, RYOKI decided to go all out as if he had been possessed by the aliens, because he thought it would have been lame if he played it cool. [24]
  • SKY-HI makes a cameo in the MV as the man who turns the computer off. [25]
  • The song samples some lyrics from OZROSAURUS' "AREA AREA" and SKY-HI's Snatchaway.
  • The recording of the song was the most time consuming and difficult for the group thus far. They had to record up to 7 takes of some parts because of the difficult harmonies. [24]
  • With the release of Scream BE:FIRST became the first artist in history to have five songs win two #1 Oricon digital rankings (downloads and streaming) for a single work within the same week.[26]
