Watanabe Shota (渡邉翔太 born March 15, 1998), known professionally as Aile The Shota (アイルザショウタ), is a Japanese singer/songwriter signed to Japanese management company BMSG. He made his debut as a soloist with the single AURORA TOKIO in January 2022 under BMSG (Label), and now releases under Bullmoose Records.

Prior to joining BMSG, Aile The Shota took part in BMSG's boy group audition THE FIRST, where he was one of the 10 finalists. Although he was not selected to be a part of the final group, he was offered a contract as a solo artist with the company.
Before participating in THE FIRST, Aile The Shota was active as an underground solo artist under the names nabepotato and Yum Ferrii.

Early Life[]

Shota fell in love with music when he purchased his first CD in 2004, during his first grade of elementary school[1]. He started to think of becoming an artist when he watched music shows on TV, being particularly mesmerized by the dance&vocal groups. His love for singing was confirmed by his family, who encouraged him when he performed[2]. He believes that the only dream he ever had was to become a singer[3].

Despite his love for music, Shota wasn't involved in any artistic extra curricular activities, and instead devoted his time to football[3], which he played for nine years until he graduated from middle school, when he quit because he thought he wasn't suited for it after all[4].

In 2013, during his first year of high school, Shota revisited his dream of becoming an artist[1] and started auditioning for different companies, despite having no music foundation[3]. Ultimately, he was accepted into a training school where he learned the basics of desktop music and songwriting [5], which he attended for a year[3]. Motivated by his experience in this school, in the summer of 2014 he decided that he would pursue music as a career[5][3].

In 2016, during his first year of university, he joined the dance club of his college, which broadened his knowledge of music and introduced him to hip-hop, R&B and jazz[1]. His best friend showed him different artists one by one and finally introduced him to Maddy Soma of Cookie Plant at a dance showcase in Shibuya eggman, after which Cookie Plant took him under their wing and taught him about hip-hop music, dance, and the general culture. After meeting them, he started taking dance lessons from Carlos Takanashi Hikaru, leader of hip-hop crew Do The Right Inc., and GENKI of Super Shimada Brothers. Shota dubs Carlos and GENKI as his "dance parents" and Maddy Soma as his "dance older brother"[6].
Despite attending college, Shota always had his sight set on becoming an artist, and never went job hunting in his last year[3].

2018-2020[]

Shota started his career as an artist in 2018[1], taking part in various underground live events and uploading some songs to Soundcloud under the name nabepotato.
On March 16, 2020 Shota released "Drizzle", his first single as nabepotato. He wrote and composed the song himself.
On June 1, 2020 he released his second single "Eve (feat. MOON)", which he also wrote and composed.

On January 1, Shota changed his stage name to Yum Ferrii and released his first single under this name, "with". He wrote and composed the song himself.

In February, Shota auditioned for SKY-HI's THE FIRST. He passed the Quality screening round in Tokyo (conducted in-person) with "Let it Be" feat. Kid Fresino by Daichi Yamamoto (dance performance). He ranked 18th out of the 30 contestants, moving on to the 3rd round.

In THE FIRST Artisism screening, Shota sang his original song "Drizzle" and was placed in Team B (with Shimao Sota, Miyama Ryoki, Handa Yusuke, and Kubo Shunto) to perform "Sexual Healing" by SKY-HI. At the end of the 3rd round, he ranked 5th, successfully continuing on to THE FIRST training camp.

In THE FIRST training camp Creativity screening, Shota was placed in Team C with Shunto, Reiko, Rui, and Taiki. The song they created in this round is titled "YOLO". Shota ranked 2nd in this round.

In THE FIRST training camp Mock Professional screening, Shota was placed in Team "Move On" with Ryoki, Ten, Ran, Shunto, and Ryuhei. They performed Move On, and Shota ranked 9th after this round.

In THE FIRST training camp VS. Pro Artist screening, Shota performed To The First together with the remaining 10. He was ranked 4th after this round and confirmed as one of top 10 finalists of the audition.

After a one month break from THE FIRST training camp, Shota and the other finalists returned to the same location to prepare for the final round. Shota was placed in Team Shining, and performed Shining One with Junon, Sota, Manato, and Ryuhei.

In THE FIRST Creative NEO screening, he teamed up with Sota and Manato to form "ShowMinorSavage". The song they created for this round is "No Cap Navy", with instrumentals of Nanairo Holiday by SKY-HI working as the backing track.

On August 13, he was not chosen to be a member of BE:FIRST but was offered an exclusive artist contract under BMSG instead. [7]
On September 7 and 8, Shota was a guest performer at SKY-HI Round A Ground 2020, where he sang me time -remix-. He also announced his new stage name, Aile The Shota. [8]
On October 29, he performed "me time -remix-" in SKY-HI's Hachimenroppi showcase.
On October 30, it was announced that he would be joining SKY-HI in his 2022 tour SKY-HI HALL TOUR 2022 -Hachimenroppi- alongside REIKO. [9]
On November 26, it was announced that he would take part in the THE FIRST FINAL concert alongside his fellow THE FIRST contestants on January 29 and 30, 2022. [10]

Name Origin[]

SKY-HI described Shota as "like a river" meaning "the center of activity where people naturally gather," so he suggested "Lethe," a river from Greek mythology. Shota added on "Ai" (Japanese for "love") making "Aile," a word with various meanings such as "wing" (French) and "family" (Turkish), thus creating Aile The Shota[13][14].

Shota's previous stage name, nabepotato, was a combination of "nabe", from his surname "Watanabe", and "potato", from "Potato Brothers", the name of his former dance duo[15].

Artistry[]

Shota has always been a big fan of J-pop, particularly idols (male and female)[1] and he considers his roots to be in the J-pop music he listened to when he was in elementary school, including Arashi, KinKi Kids, Hirai Ken, Southern All Stars, DREAMS COME TRUE and Aqua Timez[5][1][16]. He cites "DIRTY OLD MAN ~Saraba Natsu yo~" by Southern All Stars as a song that had a big influence on him[5].

Shota got into hip-hop and R&B through his college best friend's recommendations[1], and thinks of both genres as a fundamental building block of who he is as an artist, especially the underground scene he came in contact with[17]. He cites Soulflex, Chris Brown, Migos and JP THE WAVY as big influences[16][6]. Some hip-hop songs that had a big impact on his life include JP THE WAVY's "Real Life feat. ELIONE & vividbooooy" and vividbooooy's "WooHoo (feat. Cookie Plant)"[6].

Shota defines his music style as ‘Aile The Shota,’ not fitting into a specific genre. It could bring back memories yet it has a feeling of freshness, and he thinks it has a good mixture of R&B and hip-hop, creating sophisticated pop made in Japan. He hopes that listeners will understand what he means by 'ATS-pop' when they listen to his music[2]. He considers his biggest strength to be the way he deals with music, since he looks at it not as something to be learned, but as something essential to life, and as a culture, which led to a naturalness that made him close to music[5].

He describes his composition style as "intuitive". He likes to improvise in the recording booth and write lyrics about what he's feeling in the moment[18]. He always starts the songwriting process thinking of the image color he wants the song to be[19] and likes to use word plays in his songwriting. He especially likes establishing a connection between the title of the song and its lyrics, so he tries to use titles to give an idea of what kind of song it is[5]. When he's stuck in the production process of a song, he goes to the sauna to relax, without a set limit or temperature[18].
Shota thinks his lyric writing has evolved from only being able to write about himself and his own experiences in a realistic manner, to being able to write stories in a fantasy setting, worlds that are "completely outside of himself and his sexuality", expanding his range and allowing him to face music more objectively than before[17].

In order to "keep a stock of creative references" to get input from for his own work and artwork production, Shota likes to do thorough research on anything creative that catches his eye. For example, he likes to ask the directors and creative directors of his music videos what they're into recently[20].

While he loves idols, he doesn't want to be (a conventional) one. He doesn't like idol magazines, meet and greets and other aspects that are usually prioritized and that could drive people to hurt the idols and distract them from the music and artistry. He thinks he always puts music first and that won't ever change[4][16]. However, he does hold his fans in high regard and takes what they tell him face to face very seriously[21].

Shota's goal is to be "a star that shines forever", even if he disappears. Since music is a legacy, he wants his songs to be listened to and cherished long after he's gone. This is why "stars" are a recurring motif in his songwriting[6]. His biggest goal is to be on NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen[17].

Shota is very close to his family, including his extended family, and he even considers spending time with them, especially his youngest, toddler age cousin, as the one thing that makes him feel better when he's down[15]. They are all very supportive of him and his career and they check out the media he's in more than he does[23].
His parents always encouraged him and supported him in his creative endeavors, ever since he was young[3]. Even after he graduated from university and couldn't get results as an artist, they praised and believed in him[3]. He thinks he gets his positive mindset from them[23].

Shota also thinks of his friends as part of his family[3]. His goal in life used to be the pride of his family and friends[16].

Education
In March 2016, Shota graduated from high school.
In March 2020, he graduated from Dokkyo University, where he majored in liberal arts[4].

He played football for 9 years, throughout elementary and middle school, and his position was center-back[4]. He switched to gymnastics in high school[24].

As a kid, he had no problem studying and could easily do it if he tried[4]. He was good at Math and Japanese, and even got a near perfect score in Japanese in one of the national entrance exams. Nevertheless, he's bad at memorizing kanji[4].

Throughout his college years, he worked part-time at a restaurant with his friends from his university's dance club. However, he didn't go job hunting during his last year, as he had already decided to become an artist, and was the only one from his friend group left working at the restaurant after graduation, which allowed him to support his activities as an artist[3].

  • Novel Core thinks of Shota as "the guardian god of BMSG". [29]
  • He wants to be a mentor to the younger BMSG members[16]
  • Shota prioritizes being authentic and true to himself at all times. Striking a balance was hard for him once he debuted, as he wanted to be positive on stage and started bottling up his negative emotions, to the point where he would explode without knowing why[16]
  • He loves meeting and talking with people[23]. He thinks that once he meets and talks with someone, they're already friends, so making friends comes easy to him[30].
  • He's a big anime and manga fan. [31]
  • He's currently into R&B artists from various Asian countries, particularly those with cute voices, and he's especially interested in the South Korean R&B scene[21].
  • He used to be really into j-pop idol group AKB48. He went to their live performances and even joined their fanclub. He really liked the melody lines of their songs[4].
  • JUNON and SOTA were scared of him during THE FIRST's 2nd around, to the point where they didn't dare going into the waiting room because he was sitting right in front of the door[16].
